2018-2020 DIGITAL LEARNING IMPLEMENTATION GRANT

On Wednesday, October 21, 2015 Golden LEAF Foundation President, Dan Gerlach, presented the Hyde County Board of Education with an award check in the amount of $200,000.

The Press Release from Hyde County Superintendent, Dr. Randolph Latimore on October 2015 was as follows:

The Golden LEAF grant award supports the implementation of the Hyde County Schools 1:1 Chromebook Initiative. This innovative project provides personal technology to every Hyde County Schools middle, high school and early college student in grades 6-13 enrolled at Mattamuskeet Early College High School in Swan Quarter, NC and Ocracoke School located on Ocracoke Island. The Golden LEAF award also generously supports state-of-the-art professional development in digital learning and coaching to all Hyde County Schools teachers working with students in grades 6-13 and provides by faculty members from the Friday Institute at North Carolina State University.

“The Golden LEAF Foundation supports programs that demonstrate promise in growing the talent, knowledge and skills of our youth, especially in the rural areas of our state,” said Dan Gerlach, Golden LEAF president. “The Hyde County Schools’ project is dedicated to transforming their classrooms into 21st century digital learning environments. The implementation of this program will provide Hyde County Schools with Chromebooks for students in grades 6-13 and prepare teachers to effectively utilize technology to improve teaching and learning so that all students are prepared to graduate ready for college or careers.”

With the tremendous assistance of an Innovative team from Friday Instiute consisting of Tavia Clark, Brittany Miller, Greg Garner and Abbey Futrell a true blended learning experience was created and successfully deiivered throughout the Hyde County School District.

Jess Whittemore and Dail Berry, middle school educators at Mattamuskeet Early College High School, share their extraordinary use of Hyperdocs to enhance the 4C's with their students.

Jessica Whittemore and Dail Berry took the role of digital leadership to the next level by presenting at the annual NCTIES 2018 conference held in Raleigh, North Carolina. Through the support of our motivation Friday Institute coach, Abbey Futrell, these educators took the leap. Needless to say their presentation was such a success that they were asked to present a second session at the spur of the moment. Hyde County Schools Technology Department could not be prouder of these two innovative digital teacher leaders.

The Instructional Technology Facilitator, Sabrina Lynn King-Bowen, and the Ocracoke Career and Technology Educator, Casey Robertson, teamed up to present at NCTIES 2018 in Raleigh. The instructional technology workshop titled, "Become a Digital Breakout Architect".

In October 2017 the Hyde County Schools Instructional Technology Facilitator, Sabrina Lynn King-Bowen, had the opportunity to present at the Coaching Digital Learning Institute at the Friday Institute. The presentation was titled, "The Ripple Effect: One small step results in one giant leap iin the classroom". The presentation focused on the impact student reflections should have on designing and creating engaging and purposeful learning experiences in the classroom, as well as, the importance of teacher reflection. Mrs. King-Bowen thanks the Friday Institute team for inspiring this presentation.

In November, 2017 Hyde County School's leaders attended the NERESA Leadership Conference in Kitty Hawk, NC. Through this outstanding conference school leaders were able to connect and collect ideas and concepts related to best practices occuring in Northeastern North Carolina. During this conference, HCS Instructional Technology Facilitator, Sabrina Lynn King-Bowen, presented "Practice What You Preach" to various district and school leaders. The presentation focused on relevancy of modeling the use of digital innovation in your schools and methods for modeling digital usage. The "take-aways" obtained at the NERESA Conference were priceless.

The Hyde County Schools Instructional Technology Facilitator, Sabrina Lynn King-Bowen, joined the NC Digital Leaders Coaches Network through the Friday Institute.

The Friday Instiute program includes:

• A year-long, blended program with a cohort of peers from across North Carolina to provide professional networking and collaboration within a blended and sustainable community for the sharing of ideas and strategies

• Ongoing interaction with experts and community through monthly face-to-face convenings and online interactions;

• Participation based upon an application process to ensure interest and commitment to fully participate and collaborate with peers; and,

• Alignment with the North Carolina Media Coordinator, Instructional Technology Facilitator & Coaching Evaluation Instruments and Standards

The one of kind experience provided a networking system unlike any other. The ability to collaborate and share experiences with others digital learning innovators was inspirational and extremenly beneficial.

From the beginning of our journey with the Golden LEAF Foundation and the Friday Instiute, Hyde County Schools has been supported by an entire team of innovative team members and leaders who have inspired our district to embrace digital learning and prepare our students for the unknown.

Hyde County Schools could not be where we are today concerning digital innovation and learning without the neverending support of our Friday Instiute coach, Mrs. Abbey Futrell. Her enthusiasm and passion sparked passion in us all.

Thank you Golden LEAF Foundation and Friday Instutute for provided us the ability and support to spark digital innovation in our district and change the future for our children.

During our journey with the Friday Insitute, we were provided reoccuring support from the Research Associate, Jaclyn Stevens. Through her periodic visits and district walk-throughs, along with teacher focus group meetings and student focus group meetings, we were kept well informed of our districts progress and needs. We thank the continual support and resources provided by Jaclyn Stevens throughout our GoldenLEAF grant.
